Upgradation of SVC Food and Textiles Lab

The Home Economics department prepares students for challenges in their lives by offering skill based education. With increasing interest in the Food and textiles course, the College recently upgraded its home Economics laboratory. The Home Economics department was relocated to its own two room building.

Foods Lab
The foods lab has been thoroughly renovated and painted. We are very grateful to our sponsors JACKS OF FIJI and COURTS who very generously assisted in upgrading the Foods lab by supplying the following equipment worth about $20,000.
  1. 5 new stainless oven and griller stoves
  2. 1 new refrigerator
  3. Stainless steel work surface and work benches for five workstation.

The product baked or cooked is sold to teachers and student at a lower price to recover the cost of ingredients.

Our generous sponsors

We save money for the College by preparing sandwiches, cakes and pies needed for school functions.

Textiles Lab
The textiles lab has been thoroughly renovated and painted. New work benches and demonstration tables have been installed. This has created more space for each student to get experience in use of the sewing equipment.

Staffroom
The department now has its own separate staffroom which has been tiled and nicely painted.

The above upgrading has helped students and teachers to get exposure to modern and well-equipped food and textiles lab. Now students learn income generating skills such as baking and sewing. This will encourage students to choose their career in cookery and fashion as there are more jobs available in these areas.

Encouraged by the efforts of the College to develop the Home Economics department, we plan to set up a back yard kitchen garden. This will encourage gardening and also to save money spent in buying vegetables.

Future projects
We would like to have the following to further improve the department so that we can provide better education:

  1. Baking equipment such cake mixers
  2. Cooking equipments such as electric slow cooker and electric pressure cookers as it caters for the new curriculum for forms 5 and 7.
  3. A computer for CAD designing (textiles)
