Vivekananda Human Excellence Scholarships
Vivekananda Human Excellence Awards
Swami Vivekananda said, "Mere book-learning won't do. We want that education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded and by which one can stand on one's own feet.... Education is not the amount of information that is put into your brain and runs riot there, undigested, all your life. We must have life-building, man-making, character-making assimilation of ideas."
Traditionally, students have been rewareded for their academic achievements only. We strongly feel that the students have to be actively encouraged to assimilate good human values such as integrity, dedication, sacrifice, cooperation, dignity of labour, self-discipline, respect for others etc etc. Their efforts are to be rewarded and appreciated.
The Vivekananda Human Excellence Award scheme has been started from 2009 to encourage and appreciate the inculcation of higher values so that our students develop all-rounded personalities.
The award is implemented as follows:
Throughout the year, the form teachers discuss the prescribed values and encourage the students to consciously assimilate them in their lives. The students fill-in self assessment sheet every month. The teachers observe and guide them.
- At the end of the year, each form teacher recommends (on a prescribed form) the names of 3 boys and 3 girls from his or her respective class for the award.
- The Level Deans and the College Administration then recommend to the SVC Academic committee 2 boys and 2 girls out of the list.
- The SVC Academic Committee then makes the final selection.
- On the Annual Day the selected students receive the award certificates and the following years College fees are paid for them from sponsorships received from our donors. Form 7 students receive a refund.
- The benefactors are informed of the names of the recepients of the awards and the list is printed in the College Annual magazine.
2010 Vivekananda Human Excellence Awards
Swami Vivekananda wanted “man-making and Character-building education.” In order to facilitate this ideal and to encourage and reward the students, the annual “Vivekananda Human Excellence Awards” scheme was instituted in SVC’s Diamond Jubilee Year (2009) with the support of our generous well-wishers and ex-students.
The awards constitute a certificate and full school fees for the next year (Form 7 students are refunded). They go to one boy and one girl “model student” of each of the 27 forms in SVC. The class teachers observe the students throughout the year and nominate them to the SVC Scholarship Committee constituting of Deans, Administration, Management and members of SVC PTFA. The committee made the final selection of the under-listed 54 recipients.
We are happy to report that this scheme has had a very positive impact on the conduct and behaviour of the students and it is our hope that the good values imbibed during their stay at SVC will mould them into good, honest and ideal citizens of Fiji. We thank our sponsors for their generous support.
